Novelist, playwright and screenplay writer, Kiran Nagarkar (Bombay, 1942) is one of India’s best known writers. He writes both in Marathi and English. His first novel, Saat Sakkam Trechalis (published in 1974 and in English with the title Seven Sixes are Forty-Three) is considered a milestone in post-independence Indian literature.
In 1978 he wrote his controversial play Bedtime Story. Kabirache Kay Karayache?, on the clashes between Hindus and Muslims and the bomb attacks of 1992-1993, was staged in 1994. Since Ravan & Eddie (1994, also published in a German translation) Nagarkar has written in English. His third novel, Cuckold (1997) was awarded the highest recognition of the Indian literary academy, the Sahitya Academy Award. Nagarkar’s works (including his latest novel, God’s Little Soldiers) have been translated in different countries.
“Kiran Nagarkar is a born storyteller, with an infallible eye for detail and skilful in the use of words. A master of eroticism.”
India Today
“Kiran Nagarkar has the touch of genius. In my opinion, he is one of the best Indian writers of our time.”
Khushwant Singh, The Telegraph
“The second novel by Kiran Nagarkar is irreverent, ferocious, disarming and deep ( …) His images are razor slashes that open up a path for the reader. His humour is black, but passionate.”
Manjula Padmanabhan, The Asian Age
“Ravan & Eddie is one of the sharpest, most licentious and insightful novels in the current panorama of Anglo-Indian literature.”
The Sunday Observer

Wednesday, 25th November. Fourth day at Tübingen. The University seems to think that I’m fit material for the Poetikdozentur (professorship of poetics). I get the feeling that I’m here not as a novelist, but as an expert on extremism and terrorism from Interpol. This afternoon I have a workshop with Christoph Peters and Dr. Anil Bhatti with students who will grill us on these subjects. Moral of the story: Don’t write a book called God’s Little Soldier.
